One Portal. One Identity. Unlimited Possibilities
Developed by the Digital Department, Universiti Malaysia Sabah
In the ever-evolving landscape of digital transformation, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) envisioned a unified gateway, one that connects every system, user, and service under a single digital roof. What began as an idea to simplify access to university applications has now evolved into a cornerstone of UMS’s digital modernization journey: the Kinabalu Portal.
The Idea: Simplifying Access, Unifying Experience
The initial concept of the Kinabalu Portal was born from a simple yet powerful observation — UMS staff and students were required to log in separately to dozens of different systems. Each system had ...
Comprehensive development of digital systems and applications — from requirement analysis and Business Requirement Specification (BRS) to system architecture design, programming, testing, and integration with existing modules.
The Digital Department of UMS is committed to ensuring that all developed applications feature modern, consistent, and responsive interfaces that prioritize accessibility, usability, and seamless user interaction across desktop and mobile devices. This design philosophy ensures every UMS digital platform delivers a professional, user-friendly, and inclusive experience.
We at Digital@UMS are committed to implementing strong application security controls, performing regular vulnerability testing, and ensuring compliance with the National Digital Compliance Policy, UMS ICT Policies, and ISMS Standards to protect institutional data and digital integrity.
Designing, developing, and maintaining structured, secure, and optimized databases to ensure high data integrity and reliability across all university systems. Supported database technologies include Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, MariaDB, Qdrant , and MongoDB enabling both traditional relational and modern NoSQL or AI-driven applications.
Developing robust architecture and API integration layers to ensure seamless interoperability and Single Sign-On (SSO) within the UMS digital ecosystem through the Kinabalu Portal. The architecture will be expanded to integrate the Malaysian MyDigital ID enabling secure identity verification for UMS applications and digital services.
Driving UMS’s digital transformation through automation, artificial intelligence, data analytics, and IoT adoption — enhancing institutional efficiency, collaboration, and innovation across departments. This transformation strengthens UMS’s services in administration, academia, research and development (R&D), finance, and benefits the entire university community.
UMS Digital Department’s systems are built using multiple enterprise-grade frameworks and languages, including Frappe Framework, PHP Yii2, Python, .NET and ColdFusion — ensuring flexibility, scalability, and compatibility across diverse application environments.
Upgrading legacy systems into modern web and mobile platforms to enhance performance, user experience, and data security while ensuring long-term system sustainability.
